Netflix’s ‘Single Inferno’s‘ Song Ji-A is currently under fire after finding out that the clothes she wore on the show were fake designer items.
Her YouTube persona, Free Zia, focused on lifestyle and fashion. Quite a chunk of the show’s viewers and supporters felt deceived and misled. She was edited out of the show ‘The Manager,’ harassed, and her career heavily affected. However, it also started a fashion trend with people boldly posting fake designer items because screw capitalism!
It was mostly international fans that were baffled at the backlash Song Ji-A faced. They felt that it was disproportionate, and it wasn’t even a crime or a scandal, to begin with. Hence, it started a fashion revolution with people showing their “designer items.” Even the queen herself, Catharina Yul Hur, showed her support by posting a video of her wearing a fake Dior top, and many don’t even see the difference.
However, the difference is more of a cultural perspective. In an article by Buzzfeed, Korean-American social media agency owner Courtney Park explained that South Korean culture is highly image-conscious. Park stated that Song supported a counterfeit industry when she set herself in a heavily glitzy field. Lying is also a taboo in the highly conservative culture.
There are fake fashion companies that fund crime organizations and support the underground economy. Not that she’s supporting any, but there are many out there. It’s hard to decipher which sells counterfeit and which exploits.
In the end, even with people’s support, this ‘scandal’ does affect her chances of getting brand deals. Many people hope that her restarting her career will be enough to stop the harassment she faced for a month and not ruin her future.
