SM Entertainment’s super girl group GOT the Beat (Girls on Top) was much-awaited with its teasers. The group consists of soloist BoA, Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon and Hyoyeon, Red Velvet’s Seulgi and Wendy, and Aespa’s Winter and Karina. It was a highly-anticipated lineup due to the girls’ accomplishments in the industry. However, the debut song created quite a buzz with its lyricism and beat.
The song is, in summary, the singer’s POV demanding a girl to step back from their guy and leave them. Some netizens found the lyrics misogynistic in nature. The song’s vibe felt like girls were being pitted against each other. As others suggest, the super girl group could’ve stuck to a feminine anthem. It was basically fighting over a guy and demeaning the other girl.
The songwriter is Ryan Jhun, and he is seen as a sexist by the KPop community. In an old post, a netizen used the word boj-dol. The word is a combination of the derogatory word for vagina and idol. In that thread, Jhun responded that he made enough money or produced well for boj-dols. Many felt that his writing was out of touch. In essence, it was a catfight for a man, which wasn’t well-received. Some deemed it a man’s dream sung by girls.
Netizens also felt that the song was over the top with unnecessary high notes. It did not show and highlight the girls’ flair. The beat can be forgiven, but the high notes and the lack of power in their dance felt off. All of them were great dancers, but the choreography was boring and did not match their level of expertise. There’s also no surprise element for a supergroup.
