The Tea is Hot! The News is Cool. And the DRAMA is Oh So Juicy!!!

JTBC’s drama Snowdrop continues to gain ire due to the accusation of political distortion and romanticization of the violence in the era where the drama is set.

1987 remains to be a historic and painful year for South Korea. That was a time when thousands of citizens and students joined their hands together and protested for the condemnation of the torture and killing of a student activist. They also did this to pressure the government to hold a direct presidential election.

The first episode featured the South Korean military regime, the Agency for National Security Planning, or ANSP, and their conspiring with North Korea to stay in power. Now, people decided to speak about the drama through a petition that they passed on the National Petition board on the website of the office of Korean President Moon Jae-in.

As of this moment, the petition garnered 300,000 signatures. Korea Communications Standards Commission, KCSC, the government agency in control of broadcast and internet content regulation, received more than 5,000 complaints against the drama.

The Blue House released a statement, allowing the drama to continue production. In their statement, the regulation committee will be closely monitoring Snowdrop. Should the drama fall into severity for distortion of history after airing, the producers will have to take full responsibility and deal with it accordingly.

Snowdrop continues to spike controversy despite only airing two episodes. Still, JTBC will not be dropping the drama any time soon. Through their statement, JTBC insists that audience concerns will be settled. They also accept people’s criticism.

Snowdrop is available on JTBC and Disney+.
