SM Entertainment’s super girl group GOT The Beat will have their first-ever stage performance. The group that debuted on January one will perform on Mnet’s “M Countdown” on January 27.
They are set to perform their debut single, “Step Back.” The only time they performed this song was on their debut at SM Entertainment’s New Year concert, “SMTOWN Live 2022: SMCU Express @KWangya.”
However, as MNet asked fans to vote for their favorite artists, the attention was suddenly monopolized by SM Entertainment’s announcement.
The song “Step Back” had garnered mixed reactions due to its lyricism, choreography, and message. The band comprises SM Entertainment’s female superstars BoA, Girls’ Generation’s Hyoyeon and Taeyeon, Red Velvet members Seulgi and Wendy, and Aespa’s Karina and Winter showcased as a super girl group. People believed that their debut single would be a feminine anthem as the women donned edgy clothes.
However, this was far from the truth. The song’s point of view is that of a woman demanding another woman to “step back” from their boyfriend, followed by not-so-pleasant words. People see it as out of touch, old-fashioned, and a man’s dream, not fit for a group marketed as the female “IT” group.
The announcement didn’t please M Countdown’s viewers. Still, they remain optimistic and await the album before making a verdict.
M Countdown airs every Thursday, 6 pm, KST.
