It’s official! Squid Game is the most successful series ever to debut on Netflix. With a whopping 111 million fans, it surpassed the show Bridgerton with 82 million viewers. The action thriller ranks VIP, being #1 in 94 countries, according to Cheddar.
Netflix released an official announcement through Twitter.
CNN reported that over 111 million accounts watched at least two minutes of the series within four weeks since Squid Game’s debut on September 17. Aside from beating Bridgerton, it also surpassed shows such as The Witcher, Stranger Things, Tiger King, and more.
With this success, Kim Minyoung, Netflix’s vice president of content for Asia-Pacific, told CNN that:
“When we first started investing in Korean series and films in 2015, we knew we wanted to make world-class stories for the core K-content fans across Asia and the world. Today, Squid Game has broken through beyond our wildest dreams.”
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk ponders the possibilities of a season two while Netflix is celebrating Squid Game’s success by releasing official merchandise and even Zoom backgrounds.
